NCDC Clarifies Status, Confirms Zero Active Ebola Cases Following Evacuation of Index Patient

ABUJA — The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has dismissed rumors of widespread community transmission, confirming that there is currently no active, confirmed case of Ebola Virus Disease within the country.

The clarification comes in the wake of the medical evacuation of the sole index patient—a 42-year-old Ugandan-born diplomat’s spouse—to Switzerland on Monday morning, October 26.

Speaking to newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, NCDC Director-General Dr. Jide Idris dispelled false reports circulating on social media claiming multiple unverified outbreaks across various states. He emphasized that following the exit of the primary patient, Nigeria currently records zero active cases.

“The fact that we currently have no active confirmed case does not mean we should drop our guard or declare Nigeria completely Ebola-free,” Dr. Idris clarified. “Heightened surveillance and contact monitoring must continue unabated until the mandatory 21-day incubation window elapses without secondary transmission.”

The agency chief disclosed that three monitored contacts who recently developed mild symptoms were immediately isolated and tested, with all laboratory results returning negative for the Ebola virus.

Public health officials reiterated that all 54 primary contacts remain under active quarantine and routine monitoring across the Federal Capital Territory, as health teams continue field surveillance to prevent any potential secondary spread.
