ABUJA — The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has pledged that his administration will moderate petrol pump prices nationwide by eliminating systemic corruption within Nigeria’s fuel pricing and distribution framework if elected in 2027.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Thursday, September 10, 2026, the former Anambra State governor asserted that ordinary citizens are currently purchasing Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) at artificially inflated costs driven by inefficiency and administrative leakages in the energy supply chain.
Obi clarified that while subsidy removal is often framed as the sole trigger for regional economic hardship, the deepening poverty across the country—particularly in Northern Nigeria—stems primarily from unaddressed structural factors, insecurity, and mismanaged public resources rather than energy price deregulation alone.
