‘My husband’s selflessness lessons for contemporary governance – Nnamdi Azikiwe’s wife

Uche Azikiwe, widow of Nigeria’s first President, Nnamdi Azikiwe, has described her late husband as a selfless leader who championed the interests of a united Nigeria.

Uche Azikiwe made the statement on Tuesday during an interview on Prime Time, a programme on Arise Television, monitored by LAGOS TIMES.

She described her marriage to the Pan-Africanist as God’s plan, stressing that she is a child of destiny for having been married to the first indigenous Governor-General of Nigeria.

“Zik was a selfless leader and a good listener. He loved to serve and always thought about Nigeria as a whole. He listens to everybody before making a decision.

“If he saw that what he wanted was going to create a problem for the people, he would rather go with the people’s interest so that there would be peace.

“When I couldn’t gain admission into the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, because of a deficiency in Mathematics in my WAEC result, I thought my husband would call the Vice-Chancellor and intervene, but he didn’t, so I had to wait for another year.

“Because of his love for one Nigeria, some people from the Southeast would see him as someone who was thinking for Nigeria and not just the Igbo people, and that’s the last thing he would like to hear about. He wanted the interest of Nigeria and Africa, not just that of the Igbos,” she said.
