ENUGU — Apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has called on governors across the five South-East states to immediately embrace full local government autonomy and demonstrate absolute transparency in managing state and local financial allocations.
The apex body made the demand during the official celebration of Igbo Day 2026 in Enugu, emphasizing that sustainable economic growth and security across the region depend heavily on functional, financially independent grassroots governance.
Leadership of the group expressed deep concern over the continued stagnation at the local council levels, noting that despite recent judicial rulings on financial autonomy, local government administration in parts of the South-East remains constrained by state-level interference.
Ohanaeze urged the governors to channel public resources into critical rural infrastructure, agricultural modernization, and youth employment schemes to stem rising insecurity and economic migration out of the region.
The cultural umbrella body also reaffirmed its commitment to regional unity, justice, and equitable development, calling on political leaders across Igboland to align their governance priorities with the genuine aspirations of the people.
