Former First Lady Aisha Buhari has paid a glowing tribute to her late husband, former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing his unwavering commitment to human capital development as one of his most enduring legacies for the nation.
Speaking in Abuja at a solemn gathering marking the first anniversary of the former president’s passing, Aisha Buhari reflected on his decades of public service, specifically highlighting his administration’s targeted interventions in the country’s educational sector.
The remembrance event, which drew close family members, close associates, and prominent political figures to the federal capital, served as a platform to honor the memory of the former leader who passed away in July 2025 in London at the age of 82.
In her address, Aisha Buhari noted that her late husband viewed access to quality education as the foundational bedrock for national growth and security. She emphasized that his administration consistently prioritized expanding school infrastructure, increasing funding opportunities, and implementing long-term policies targeted at strengthening educational systems across Nigeria’s diverse geopolitical zones.
“His dedication to empowering young Nigerians through the weapon of education will continue to inspire future generations,” Aisha Buhari stated, visibly moved as she recounted his lifelong ethos of public discipline and integrity. “His contributions to national development, particularly his belief that every Nigerian child deserves a classroom, will be remembered for years to come.”
The ceremony featured prayers from Islamic scholars who interceded for the repose of the late president’s soul and prayed for continued peace and unity across the federation. Dignitaries at the event also praised the late statesman’s role in deepening Nigeria’s democratic transitions, remembering him as a leader who placed national stability above personal interest throughout his tenure from 2015 to 2023.
As family and friends joined her in marking the one-year milestone, the former First Lady expressed her deep gratitude to the millions of Nigerians who have continued to offer prayers and support to the family since the passing of the former president.
