The Inspector General of Police, IGP Disu, on Thursday held a closed-door meeting with the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, to formulate a robust security framework ahead of the 2027 general elections. The meeting, held at the INEC headquarters in Abuja, focused on addressing emerging security threats and ensuring a hitch-free electoral cycle.
Professor Amupitan, who recently succeeded Professor Mahmood Yakubu, emphasized that the commission is committed to conducting “technology-driven and transparent” elections. However, he warned that the success of the 2027 polls hinges on a secure environment for both voters and electoral officers.
In response, IGP Disu reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s dedication to absolute neutrality. He disclosed that a new inter-agency coordination plan is being developed to mitigate violence in “flashpoint” regions. “Our goal is to provide a level playing field where every Nigerian can exercise their franchise without fear,” the IGP stated. The meeting concluded with the formation of a joint technical committee to oversee pre-election security deployments.
