The fragile peace across Nigeria’s public university campuses is on the verge of collapsing as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) yesterday issued a stern warning of an impending national strike. The union’s aggressive posture follows what it termed “misleading and utterly deceptive” claims made by the Minister of Education regarding the status of the renegotiated 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement.
The Spark: A Minister’s Defense
The brewing crisis was ignited by a recent media briefing where the Minister of Education asserted that the Federal Government had substantially fulfilled its obligations under the revised agreement and was actively implementing the welfare packages designed to keep lecturers in the lecture halls. The Minister had pleaded for patience, suggesting that the remaining friction points were merely administrative nuances that did not warrant industrial disharmony.
However, ASUU has rejected this narrative. Addressing a crowded press conference at the union’s national secretariat in Abuja, the ASUU National President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, accused the Minister of playing politics with the future of Nigerian students.
“We read with utter dismay the claims by the Minister that the government has reached a comfortable understanding with our union,” Osodeke stated. “We want to state categorically to the Nigerian public, parents, and students that the Minister’s claims are a tissue of lies. No signed agreement has been implemented, and our members are still operating under sub-human conditions.”
The Bone of Contention: The Unsigned Nimi Briggs Report
At the heart of the current dispute is the long-awaited signing and implementation of the renegotiated agreement, which was drafted under the late Professor Nimi Briggs’ committee. ASUU contends that the government has consistently shifted the goalposts, refusing to formalize the wage increments, research grants, and university autonomy clauses contained in the document.

Accumulated Earned Academic Allowances (EAA): Billions of naira in arrears for excess workloads remain unpaid across federal and state universities.

Proliferation of State Universities: The union accused state governors of establishing new universities as “constituency projects” while neglecting existing ones, putting a massive strain on the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).
Campuses on Standby
With the expiration of the union’s latest internal consultation window, ASUU zones across the country have begun mobilizing their members. From the University of Ibadan (UI) to the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, local chapters are reportedly holding emergency congresses to vote on the modalities of the looming industrial action.
The threat of a fresh strike comes at a delicate time for the country’s tertiary education calendar, as most universities are currently scrambling to stabilize their academic semesters following years of historic disruptions. Should ASUU proceed with the strike, it will paralyze the academic pursuits of millions of Nigerian youths, setting off a familiar chain reaction of economic and social anxieties.
The union concluded its briefing by placing the ball squarely in the court of the Presidency, warning that unless concrete steps—beyond ministerial rhetoric—are taken within the next fourteen days, they should not be held responsible for the total shutdown of public universities.
