President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed key economic officials to examine measures to cushion the impact of the ongoing Middle East conflict on Nigerians, assuring citizens that his administration remains committed to improving living conditions. The President gave the directive on Friday during a civic reception in Yenagoa, following the commissioning of major infrastructure projects executed by Governor Douye Diri. Tinubu specifically tasked the Ministries of Finance and Budget, alongside the Office of the Head of Service led by Didi Esther Walson-Jack, to assess and propose interventions to mitigate the economic strain linked to the US-Israeli war on Iran. Acknowledging rising hardship, particularly from increasing fuel prices, the President said his administration is attentive to public concerns and will act accordingly. “Yes, I hear you from various angles of the economy. The fuel prices are biting hard,” Tinubu said, adding that Nigeria’s situation remains comparatively stable when viewed against challenges in other African countries. He reiterated that his government would work closely with relevant agencies to develop strategies aimed at easing the burden on vulnerable Nigerians, describing his administration as one that “cares.” The President also reaffirmed the commitment of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to delivering tangible development, including infrastructure, jobs, and economic opportunities. Tinubu, who was accompanied by several governors including Hope Uzodimma, Dapo Abiodun, Umo Eno, and Sheriff Oborevwori, emphasized the importance of collaboration between federal and state governments in accelerating development. Other dignitaries at the event included former Delta State Governor James Ibori and businessman and former senator Ben Murray-Bruce. Commending Governor Diri, Tinubu praised the state government’s infrastructure drive, noting that projects such as bridges and road networks would boost economic opportunities and connectivity. Among the projects inaugurated were a 60-megawatt gas-fired Independent Power Plant in Elebele, a 630-metre Angiama–Oporoma Bridge, and a newly constructed road in Yenagoa. Earlier, the President observed a minute’s silence in honour of fallen Nigerian soldiers and former Bayelsa State Governor, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha. In his remarks, Governor Diri credited the federal government’s policy support for enabling the delivery of the power project, describing it as a major step toward achieving reliable electricity supply in the state. He noted that the projects would stimulate economic growth, improve connectivity, and enhance the quality of life for residents, while also advancing the state’s broader development agenda. The event formed part of Tinubu’s official visit to Bayelsa State, where he reiterated his administration’s commitment to fostering partnerships with subnational governments to drive economic development and national progress.
