Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has unveiled plans by his administration to establish a state-owned commercial airline aimed at boosting regional connectivity and creating direct employment opportunities for local aviation professionals.
Speaking during the 40th Executive Council Meeting at the Government House in Kano, Governor Yusuf disclosed that the proposed commercial carrier—expected to launch operations within the next year—will absorb Kano-indigenous pilots who recently completed overseas flight training.
Direct Employment for State-Sponsored Aviators
A central motivation for launching the commercial airline is to provide immediate career pathways for local pilots whose professional training was financed by the state government:

Jordanian Aviation Graduates: Governor Yusuf highlighted the academic performance of Kano-sponsored pilots who completed flight training in Jordan under a state scholarship program initiated by a previous administration.

License Revalidation Support: The announcement coincided with an award presentation to the governor by the Kano State Pilot Association, led by Chairman Naziru Ibrahim, praising the administration for facilitating the revalidation and certification of members’ commercial flying licenses.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the project, Governor Yusuf assured the aviation association and state stakeholders that the government will provide all necessary backing to ensure a smooth launch:

Joining the Sub-National Aviation Trend
If successfully operationalized, Kano State will join Akwa Ibom State (operators of Ibom Air) as one of the few Nigerian sub-national governments to establish and run a state-owned commercial airline.
The initiative is expected to leverage the strategic position of Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) as a major commercial transit hub connecting Northern Nigeria, Central Africa, and international trade routes.
