LAGOS — The Lagos State Government has announced a planned traffic diversion on the Independence Bridge in Lagos Island, following the commencement of urgent structural and asphalt maintenance works by the Federal Ministry of Works.
In an official public advisory issued on Thursday morning, October 15, 2026, the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, revealed that resurfacing operations will commence on Friday night, October 16, and run through Sunday night, October 18, 2026.
According to the Ministry of Transportation, the maintenance schedule involves partial section closures across both inbound and outbound lanes of the bridge. One lane will remain open to traffic at all times to allow vehicular movement and minimize gridlock for motorists navigating the corridor.
To ensure seamless vehicular flow and prevent severe bottlenecks around the Lagos Island central business precinct, officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will be deployed along critical intersections to direct traffic and manage alternative routes.
The ministry urged commuters and vehicle owners to plan their trips in advance, exercise patience, and strictly follow instructions provided by traffic personnel and official signage throughout the repair period.
