Nigeria’s energy sector was on high alert this morning following the news that OPEC+ will raise oil output by 188,000 barrels per day (bpd) in June. This adjustment, confirmed by the group on Sunday, comes at a precarious time for the African oil giant, which continues to struggle with its own production ceiling of 1.5 million bpd.
The June hike is the first policy move since the United Arab Emirates officially walked away from the alliance on May 1, ending a nearly 60-year membership. The UAE’s exit has sent ripples through the Lagos business community, with many questioning if the “quota-free” UAE will now trigger a price war that could hurt Nigeria’s fragile revenue streams.
While the new 188,000 bpd increase excludes the UAE, it will be distributed among seven key players: Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iraq, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, Algeria, and Oman. Notably absent from the list of countries increasing output is Nigeria. Despite the global call for more crude, local experts point out that Nigeria’s primary challenge remains its inability to even meet its current 1.5 million bpd quota due to persistent infrastructure decay and industrial-scale crude theft in the Niger Delta.
“This is a bit of a bittersweet pill for Nigeria,” said one Lagos-based energy analyst. “The world is getting more oil, which might keep prices from skyrocketing to $120, but we aren’t the ones selling it. We are stuck watching from the sidelines as the ‘Big Seven’ take the lead.”
Global oil prices showed immediate sensitivity to the news. Brent crude settled at $108.17, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate fell to roughly $101.94. The slight dip is credited to hopes of a peace settlement in the ongoing Iran conflict, which has blocked the Strait of Hormuz since February.
As the Joint Ministerial Monitoring Committee (JMMC) prepares for its next meeting on June 7, the pressure is on Nigeria to optimize its domestic production. For the “City of Excellence” and the rest of the federation, the June output hike is a stark reminder that in the global oil game, those who cannot pump, cannot profit.
