No fewer than 105 Housing Estates in Lagos are currently at the risk of being sealed up by the State Government for developing without seeking appropriate layout approvals.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Arc. Foluso Dipe in a statement notifying the defaulting estates said they failed to obtain the layout approval of the State Government for their Estate developments in accordance with relevant provisions of the Lagos State Government Notice No 6 of 1983 on Guidelines for Approval of Layouts.
“The Ministry of Physical Planning and urban Development (MPP&UD) is empowered by law to process and grant Layout Plan Approvals to Estates and regulate the development of public and private Estates in Lagos State, among other statutory functions.
“In Its quest for a functional, orderly, well organised and resilient Smart City, the Government of Lagos is determined to curb unauthorised development and deviation from approved plans so as to check proliferation of slums and the attendant environmental degradation,” Dipe noted.
The list of the defaulting Estates shows that 90 percent are located in Lekki area of the State, while Ikorodu, Ikoyi and Eti-Osa account for the rest.
Dipe said the defaulters have 21-days to process their layout approvals, warning that failure to comply would leave the State Government with no option but to seal up such Estates in accordance with the provisions of the relevant law.
“Members of the public are by this notice urged to request for Layout Plan Approvals granted by the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development before entering into any transaction with Developers as developments within Estates without evidence of Layout Plan Approval will be deemed illegal and necessary sanctions will be applied in accordance with the law,” he said.
