Two great Nigerian musicians Peter Okoye and Seun Anikulapo Kuti are now at war over the presidential candidate of Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi.
Peter Okoye of the famous musical group, PSquare is one of the musicians backing and campaigning for Peter Obi. He was also on stage, campaigning for Obi in Calabar, the capital of Cross River State.
The crisis between them crept up following Seun Kuti’s outburst on the social media condemning him for taking side with Peter Obi and calling on other youths to come on board and ensure that Peter Obi, whom he sees as the best candidate out of the 18 wins the February 25, 2023 presidential election.
Seun Kuti wonders why Peter Okoye is now campaigning for Peter Obi after performing at the inauguration of the President Muhammadu Buhari of the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC.
He believes that the world of musicians and those of politicians are miles apart, this he believes account for the reason his music is neither played on radio nor television, stressing that no politician will listen to his music and remain happy.
But his postulations did not sit well with Peter Okoye, who decided to take up the issue with him. Okoye believes that that Seun is nothing musically but mainly riding on the popularity of his father, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, the late world acclaimed King of Afrobeat music.
He also berated him for putting on an air importance over his nomination for a Grammy, stressing that there is no difference between some who got nominated for a Grammy and appearing for a muisical audition.
“We all know you are frustrated. Take heart. Grammy nominee na yardstick to measure good music”, he asked, and wonders the nature of the music that got Seun nominated for a Grammy. Besides, he said Seun is no match when it comes to music, stressing that he should be content with smoking weeds.
Taking a swipe at himself, Okoye said it is normal for families to argue, fight and settle. “But let me tell you something that is not normal in life. Smoking ‘igbo’, doing drugs and always dirty and shouting with no cloths on and many wives and concubines and plenty children from left, right, centre and still come claim you are fighting the government for Nigerians all the time is not normal. It’s irresponsible. Go clean that your living room and yourself up. Too dirty and you should know better”, he said.
He continued: “So, we should not participate in this election because some people supported APC or PDP, before now. When people don smoke igbo, dem go feel say na dem get wisdom pass. So, make we sidon look, because you say so. Dude, face your igbo and leave us alone, I understand that people sit on the fence but this one just hang for cable wire. Do yourself a favour, and put on some cloths and cover your face in shame”, he said.
Peter Okoye went a step further to set matters straight. “And just for the record, we, PSQUARE have never campaigned for any presidential candidate before, except now for Peter Obi. Did we perform for President Buhari during his inauguration in 2015, Yes. He was already the president, go and verify”, he challenged him.
Besides, he said that his late father was nobody but that through his music, he has been able to carve a niche for himself adding that the name of his father has become known globally as a result of his musical exploits.
“My late father was a nobody, but today everyone knows the Okoyes. Dude, try removing Kuti from your name make I know whether anybody sabi you. Remain in that your local shrine while people like us and others continue excelling globally. You can’t shame the shameless”, he said.
