In a major milestone for Nigeria’s healthcare and education sectors, the Federal Ministry of Education announced a historic increase in annual nursing enrollment, skyrocketing from 28,000 to 115,000 students.
The announcement, made through an official statement by the Ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, attributes the achievement to initiatives spearheaded under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The significant boost aligns with the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes revitalization efforts across key national sectors.
Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare education, highlighting the collaborative leadership with the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate. Together, they surpassed the administration’s original enrollment target of 110,000 nursing students.
The landmark accomplishment reflects the administration’s broader focus on enhancing Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medical Sciences (STEMM) education, a strategy aimed at addressing domestic and global healthcare workforce demands.
Dr. Alausa extended gratitude to stakeholders, industry leaders, the Nigerian Council of Nurses and Midwifery, teaching hospitals, and ministry staff for their efforts in achieving this feat.
According to the Ministry, the increased enrollment marks the beginning of a transformative era in Nigeria’s nursing education system, positioning the country to meet growing healthcare needs both locally and internationally.
