House of Representatives mourns the passing of Deputy Chief Whip, Rt. Hon. Adewunmi Onanuga

The House of Representatives has announced the passing of Rt. Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, the Deputy Chief Whip of the House, following a brief illness. The esteemed lawmaker, who represented the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State, died earlier today, January 15, 2025.

Born on December 2, 1965, Rep. Onanuga was a trailblazer in public service and a passionate advocate for women’s empowerment and social development. Fondly called “Ijaya,” she was first elected to the House in 2019 under the All Progressives Congress (APC). During the 9th Assembly, she served as Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, where she championed transformative policies aimed at advancing gender equality and social welfare.

Re-elected in 2023, Rep. Onanuga was appointed Deputy Chief Whip in the 10th Assembly. Her tenure was marked by exceptional leadership, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to legislative excellence. She earned admiration from her colleagues and constituents for her intellect, humility, and tireless dedication to improving the lives of Nigerians.

In a statement, House Spokesman Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr. expressed profound grief over her demise, describing her as a vibrant and committed lawmaker whose impactful contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape will not be forgotten.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, associates, the Government and People of Ogun State – particularly the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North constituency – and the entire membership of the National Assembly,” the statement read.

The House of Representatives highlighted her legacy as one of service, dedication, and a commitment to creating a better society. Funeral arrangements will be announced by her family in due course.
