The cold war between Nyesom Wike and Peter Obi escalated this week as the FCT Minister used a public forum to deconstruct Obi’s aspirations. Wike, known for his “tell-it-like-it-is” style, warned Obi that the presidency is not a prize for those who merely seek “ready-made” opportunities.
Wike’s “ready-made plate” metaphor served as a stinging indictment of what he perceives as Obi’s opportunistic brand of politics. He argued that while Obi appeals to the frustrations of the youth, he has failed to engage in the heavy lifting of building a national consensus or a party structure capable of defending votes across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas.
“Politics is about the process of cooking; it is not just about eating,” Wike stated. He suggested that Obi’s exit from the PDP in 2022 was an attempt to find an easier route to the ballot, rather than staying to fix the internal mechanisms of the party.
Supporters of the Labour Party leader have frequently pushed back against such narratives, citing Obi’s massive grassroots appeal. However, Wike’s critique highlights a growing debate within Nigerian circles: can a “movement” truly displace “structure,” or is the FCT Minister correct that those who do not help set the table will never be allowed to eat from the plate?
