ASABA — The Delta State House of Assembly has formally approved the proposed Sixth Alteration to the 1999 Constitution, paving the way for the creation of state police services across the federation.
The approval followed deliberations during plenary on Tuesday, where lawmakers voted in favor of the constitutional amendment transmitted by the National Assembly to state legislatures.
Speaking after the passage, Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Dennis Guwor, stated that the decentralization of policing will significantly enhance intelligence gathering, strengthen community policing, and safeguard lives and investments across Delta State. He noted that the legislative approval aligns with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s “MORE” agenda aimed at maintaining peace and security.
Following the adoption, Speaker Guwor directed the Clerk of the House to transmit the Assembly’s official resolution to the National Assembly for further constitutional processing.
The approval marks a critical step in achieving the mandatory two-thirds concurrence required from the 36 state houses of assembly for the constitutional amendment to take full effect.
