AY Makun’s blockbuster “The Waiter” sets for release on Netflix Friday

“The Waiter”, a blockbuster comedy film by versatile actor and comedian AY Makun is set to premiere on Netflix, a popular subscription video on demand over-the-top streaming television service, on Sept 12.
The legendary artiste made the announcement on his Instagram page @aycomedian on Tuesday night.
”The Waiter movie with 41 nominations at the Toronto International Nollywood Film Festival is coming to Netflix on Sept. 12. Save the date!,” he wrote.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the acclaimed movie hit cinemas in Nigeria and other African countries in December 2024, after its celebrity-studded premiere in Lagos.
Directed by Toka McBaror, the movie featured seasoned stars, including Regina Daniels, Shaffy Bello, Kunle Remi, Toke Makinwa, Williams Uchemba, Brain Jotter and Rahama Sadau, among others.
Written by Kehinde Joseph and produced by Darlington Abuda, “The Waiter” tells the story of Akpos, a clumsy hotel waiter entangled in a hotel invasion, sparking a thrilling and chaotic adventure.
While the film received mixed reviews from critics, audiences embraced its blend of humour and action-driven spectacle, making it one of the season’s unexpected successes.
With its upcoming Netflix release, “The Waiter” will reach international audiences further extending AY’s track record of commercially successful comedies and Nollywood’s growing visibility on streaming platforms.
NAN recalls that AY has created several record-breaking films, with his debut movie “30 Days in Atlanta” (2014), which became Nollywood’s highest-grossing film and earned a Guinness World Record.
He thereafter released “A Trip to Jamaica” (2016), grossing 170 million as Nigeria’s top film of the year.
Other blockbusters by AY Makun include “10 Days in Sun City” (2017), the Merry Men series (2018, 2019, 2023), and “Christmas in Miami”.
