Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has moved to seal the vacancy in the state’s executive wing by nominating Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo for the position of Deputy Governor. The nomination, disclosed on Wednesday via a formal communication to the State House of Assembly, is being viewed as an attempt to inject veteran administrative experience into the heart of the “Center of Commerce.”
The Governor’s spokesperson, Mustapha Muhammad, clarified that the move is part of a broader strategy to “sustain effective service delivery” and ensure that the state’s administrative machinery remains robust.
Strategic Inclusion
The selection of the 48-year-old Garo is particularly striking given his history. A stalwart of the local government system, Garo’s rise from the Chairmanship of Kabo Local Government to the leadership of ALGON in Kano has made him a household name in the state’s 44 local government areas.
His tenure as Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs under the previous administration provided him with a deep understanding of the state’s traditional and local administrative structures—assets that Governor Yusuf likely intends to leverage to maintain grassroots stability.

The Governor’s request for the Assembly’s approval is grounded in the legal bedrock of the 1999 Constitution. Specifically, Section 191(3) provides the legal window for such an appointment. By transmitting the nomination to the lawmakers, the Governor has set the stage for a screening process that political watchers expect to be swift, given the stated “wide consultations” that preceded the choice.

“The Governor has urged the Assembly to grant the necessary approval to enable the nominee to assume office and contribute his quota to the state’s progress,” the statement concluded.
