
Lagos witnessed a thrilling display of chess brilliance on March 22, 2025, as young talents took center stage at the inaugural Royal Rex Chess Tournament. Organized by veteran chess player Mr. Olurotimi Dasaolu and sponsored by Royal Rex Hotel, the event attracted over 70 players, including national champions and rising junior stars.
The tournament featured two categories:
The Elite Category: A 16-player field that included International Master (IM) Femi Balogun, Vice President of the Nigeria Chess Federation, Prince Yinka Adewole, and former NCF Chairman, Architect Theophilus Caiafas.
The Challengers Category: A 54-player section, featuring 19 junior players aged 14 and below.
Winners Shine in Competitive Battles
After six intense rounds, IM Femi Balogun emerged champion in the elite category, finishing with five points out of six. He took home a ₦150,000 cash prize. Tosin Akinwamide, who held Balogun to a draw, finished second and earned ₦100,000. A three-way tie for third place included Architect Theophilus Caiafas.
In the Challengers Category, Abiola Adeyemo dominated with 5.5 points, securing the ₦100,000 prize. The Best Female Player award saw a three-way tie between Treasure Nzeako, Victoria Ozemoje, and 10-year-old Zita Agusionu, each receiving ₦60,000. Meanwhile, 12-year-old Henry Evbuomwan was named Best Junior Player, walking away with ₦50,000.
Royal Rex Hotel Pledges Bigger Future Events
Architect Bimbo Fajemirokun, Managing Director of Royal Rex Hotel, expressed enthusiasm about the tournament’s success and pledged to sponsor an even bigger edition in the future. The Royal Rex Chess Tournament will now be held twice a year, providing an ongoing platform for young and seasoned players to showcase their skills.
