The Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory (LSMTL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) to enhance building safety and improve academic training.
The MoU, which was signed on Tuesday at LASUSTECH, Ikorodu, focused on student industrial training, joint research projects, curriculum development and professional capacity building.
The General Manager of LSMTL, Mrs Olayinka Abdul, made this known in a statement issued by the Director, Public Affairs, LSMTL, Mrs Salehu-Badejo Abimbola On Wednesday.
The general manager said that the collaboration would help to bridge the gap between theory and practice in the construction sector.
“This MoU is not just a document; it is a commitment to safeguarding the future of Lagos State’s built environment,” she said.
She said that the partnership would give students direct access to LSMTL’s facilities for hands-on training and internships, while final-year students would be able to use real project data for research.
Abdul added that the collaboration would allow joint research into new concrete mixes, using local materials, soil mechanics in Lagos, and improved testing methods.
She hoped that shared data and expertise would raise industry standards and produce highly-skilled graduates.
She quoted the Vice-Chancellor of LASUSTECH, Prof. Olumuyiwa Odusanya, as saying at the event that the agreement would enrich the university’s curriculum, provide students with practical experience and improve public safety.
“Our students and faculty will gain access to real-world industry challenges and state-of-the-art testing facilities.
” This partnership will also lead to the development of new technologies and standards that can prevent building collapses,” the general manager quoted Odusanya as saying.
According to the general manager, the highpoint of the event was the launch of a joint research programme between LSMTL engineers and LASUSTECH academics.
The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that, in 2024, LSMTL established an additional materials testing laboratory within LASUSTECH’s Ikorodu campus to serve both construction projects in the axis and engineering research projects in the university.
