The Mandate Secretary for Education, Dr Danlami Hayyo, has enrolled his two children into the Government Science Secondary School, Pyakasa, Maitama, for the 2025/2026 academic session.
Speaking shortly after the enrolment exercise on Friday in Abuja, Hayyo said the step was to restore confidence of Abuja residents in public schools.
This, he said, was considering the huge resources spent on rehabilitation and construction of schools across the territory.
He added that the public schools in the FCT have become institutions of choice under the transformative leadership and visionary foresight of the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike.
“The enrollment will clear the negative perceptions that senior government officials in the education sector, or politicians in general, do not patronise public schools.
“This is because the construction and rehabilitation of FCT Schools by the Minister have restored confidence in the sector.
“The provision of laptops, tablets and innovative back pads among others recently distributed to schools has helped to integrate technology into
classrooms .
“It has thereby equipped FCT schools with the relevant educational services
designed to empower learners at all levels with skills, moral values and mindset needed to thrive in the realities of the 21st century.”
Hayyo therefore, commended the FCT Minister for repositioning the sector for excellence.
He emphasised that FCT public schools are not only affordable but also accessible to residents and advised parents and guardians to seize the opportunity to enroll their wards and enjoy the improved learning environment being provided.
He stressed that students in FCT public schools have consistently excelled academically and brought pride to FCT and the Nation at large.
According to him, FCT students have continued to distinguish themselves in various National and international competitions, including the recent outings in
South Africa, Netherlands and Switzerland where they earned recognition and showcased Nigeria’s educational excellence
Hayyo said the FCT Education Secretariat operates through various Boards and Departments whose mandates are to ensure not only quality education but also the recruitment of qualified and ethically sound teachers.
He noted that these bodies continuously monitor the teaching and learning process to ensure that school managers adhered strictly to standards and laid-down rules.
He said they also ensure that negative vices were not tolerated.
Hayyo commended the heads of the Boards and Departments of the Education Secretariat for their unrelenting efforts and contributions towards making FCT Education Secretariat a model of efficient excellence comparable to global standard.
The Principal of the school, Malam Isah Usman, commended the minister for his intervention in the school.
Isah said with the standards recorded in the school, many senior government officials and military officers have enrolled their children in the school.
“We are overwhelmed that many senior officers and military personnel are now bringing their children to the school.
“We also deeply appreciate the Minister for completing most of our infrastructure, the multi-purpose laboratory, the dining hall, and other facilities that speak for themselves”he said.
