Seun Kuti condemns Aisha Yesufu’s activism in hijab

Popular Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has openly criticized Aisha Yesufu over her stance on women’s liberation.

Seun recalled disagreeing with Yesufu’s views on women’s freedom during a TV show appearance.

Seun condemned Yesufu for advocating women’s liberation while wearing a hijab, arguing that following Islamic or Christian customs means leaving behind African identity.

According to Seun Kuti, adopting religious practices like these go against the African essence.

In a post on his official page, Seun Kuti wrote, “It’s the Africanness in us that is helping your European behaviour. That is why Aisha Yesufu and I engaged in an argument on TV, she wan dey talk anyhow, and I told her father off.”

He continued, saying, “Once you are a Christian or Muslim, you have abandoned Africanness. That one tied hijab saying she wanted to liberate Nigerian women. Mherfker liberates yourself from your Hijab first.”
