President Tinubu Mourns Passing of Afenifere Leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of elder statesman and Afenifere leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, describing him as a pillar of justice, democracy, and national unity.

Pa Adebanjo, a prominent figure in Nigeria’s political history, passed away peacefully at his home in Lekki, Lagos, on Friday, February 14, 2025, at the age of 96, according to a statement from his family.

In a heartfelt tribute, President Tinubu lauded the late statesman’s unwavering commitment to democratic ideals and national progress. “Nigeria has lost a political leader whose decades of struggle for justice, democracy, and unity have left an indelible mark on our nation’s history,” Tinubu said.

The President highlighted Pa Adebanjo’s distinguished career, from his early role as Organising Secretary of the Action Group in the First Republic to his leadership in the Unity Party of Nigeria during the Second Republic. He also recalled the elder statesman’s fearless activism during the struggle for the restoration of democracy, particularly his role in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) following the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election.

Tinubu acknowledged the late leader’s influence on his own political journey, noting that Adebanjo was instrumental in his election as Governor of Lagos State in 1999 under the platform of the Alliance for Democracy. Despite political differences in later years, Tinubu said his respect and admiration for Adebanjo never wavered, describing him as a father figure.

“I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, the Afenifere family, the governors of the Southwest, past and present, and all Nigerians who shared his vision,” Tinubu stated.

The President urged Nigerians to take solace in the enduring legacy of Pa Adebanjo, whose lifelong dedication to justice and equity would continue to inspire future generations.

“May the soul of this great patriot find eternal rest, and may his ideals, which he so passionately envisioned, forever resonate in our country,” he concluded.
