FMAFS, NIMC launch NIN-enabled farmer registry, G2P card initiative to boost agricultural services
In a groundbreaking move to enhance agricultural services and food security in Nigeria, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (FMAFS), in collaboration with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), has unveiled the National Identity Number (NIN)-enabled farmer registry and Government 2 People (G2P) card project.
This initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, prioritizing transparency, efficiency, and inclusivity to achieve food security. It seeks to address critical challenges in identity and authentication, ensuring government services reach their intended beneficiaries effectively.
Transforming Farmer Registration and Service Delivery
The farmer registry will leverage NIN and biometric data to link individual farmers to their farmlands and related information, such as crop types, livestock, and land size. By connecting this registry to the G2P card ecosystem, the Ministry aims to provide targeted, fraud-free assistance to farmers across the country.
The G2P card features advanced biometric capabilities and multiple wallets, enabling identification and transaction processing even in areas without internet connectivity. This ensures that farmers in remote locations can access government benefits and agricultural services seamlessly.
Key Features of the G2P Card Ecosystem
Biometric Identification: Secure and verifiable identity linked to NIN.
Multiple Services: Support for farmer financing, input distribution, farmland mapping, extension services, and agency banking.
Offline Functionality: Transactions can be completed without internet access.
Personalized Cards: Unique to each farmer and tailored for government transactions such as subsidies, loans, and welfare disbursements.
Transparency: Dashboards provide real-time data on programme implementation.
The card’s large-capacity chip stores critical beneficiary information, including fingerprints, photographs, and Know Your Customer (KYC) data, ensuring accuracy and security.
A Technological Breakthrough for Agriculture
The G2P cards will be issued through biometric-enabled Point of Sale (POS) devices, enhancing service delivery regardless of infrastructure challenges. These cards will serve as digital wallets, enabling seamless disbursement of subsidies, loans, and other benefits, while minimizing fraud and ensuring end-to-end visibility in the agricultural value chain.
NIMC will provide the foundational biometric identity system, while FMAFS retains ownership of data generated through the project. The collaboration ensures that all government interventions under FMAFS programmes are securely and accurately linked to beneficiaries.
