NGE Mourns Arise News Reporter Killed in Abuja Robbery, Demands Government Action on Insecurity

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a promising news anchor and reporter with Arise News, who was killed during an armed robbery attack at her residence in Katampe, Abuja.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Guild described Maduagwu’s death as a devastating blow to journalism in Nigeria, noting that she was a dedicated professional committed to highlighting critical issues and amplifying the voices of the voiceless.

“By Somtochukwu’s untimely death, journalism has lost not just a good professional but also one who represented the future of journalism in the country,” the NGE said.

The Guild condemned the rising wave of violent crimes across the country, including robbery, kidnapping, banditry, and insurgency, which it said has left citizens and professionals, including journalists, vulnerable in their own homes and communities.

“This senseless killing is a stark reminder of the dangers Nigerians face daily,” the statement read. “We demand action from the government to address the root causes of insecurity and ensure the safety of all citizens. Those responsible for Somtochukwu’s death must be tracked down and made to face the full weight of the law.”

The NGE extended its condolences to Maduagwu’s family, colleagues at Arise News, and the wider journalism community, urging them to draw inspiration from her passion and dedication to the profession.

“At this difficult time, we stand in solidarity with Arise News and the broader journalism community. May the memory of this vibrant journalist be a blessing to all who knew her,” the Guild added.

The statement was signed by NGE President, Eze Anaba, and General Secretary, Onuoha Ukeh.
