There was pandemonium on Saturday at the venue of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary election in Akure, the Ondo state capital, as officials of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and men of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) clashed.
The security agents threw caution to the wind as they created confusion, leading to the pandemonium among aspirants, journalists, delegates and observers who were at the venue to witness the primaries.
Trouble reportedly started in the morning at the venue of the primaries, the International Events Centre, popularly called “DOME, when some policemen accused some NSCDC officers of not saluting the Deputy Inspector General of Police, DIG, Mr. Joshak Habila and the Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG in charge of zone 11, who came to monitor the exercise. They subsequently walked them out of the venue.
Investigation revealed that when the two senior police officers came into the venue, all the policemen on ground stood up to salute them but the two NSCDC officers sat down.
According to the source, the senior police officer on ground ordered them to leave the venue of the primaries immediately.
However, the opportunity for the NSCDC officers to revenge came when their State Commandant, Mr. Adeyinka Fasiu wanted to enter the venue of the exercise but was prevented by the police officers.
The development led to a confrontation, which latter degenerated to the sporadic shooting between them.
All the journalists, delegates, passers-by and observers at the venue of the primary election, started running for cover to avoid stray bullet.
It was the quick intervention of the other security agencies and senior police officers on ground that doused the tension and returned normalcy to venue of the primaries.
