The African Union (AU) has expressed serious concern over the recent political and security developments in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, including reports of violence, military attacks on state institutions, and the abduction of President Nicolás Maduro.
This was contained in a statement issued by the Union on Saturday.
“The African Union is following with grave concern the recent developments in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, including reports of the abduction of the President of the Republic, Mr. Nicolás Maduro, and military attacks on Venezuelan institutions,” the statement said.
The continental body reaffirmed its commitment to the core principles of international law.
They stressed that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Venezuela must be respected at all times.
“The African Union reaffirms its steadfast commitment to the fundamental principles of international law, including respect for the sovereignty of states, their territorial integrity, and the right of peoples to self-determination,” the statement said, referencing the United Nations Charter.
The AU condemned the use of force and emphasized that political disagreements must not be resolved through violence or military actions.
The body urged all sides to respect established constitutional institutions and avoid moves that could worsen instability.
According to the AU, Venezuela’s deep internal challenges cannot be resolved through external pressure or force but through peaceful engagement among its people.
“The African Union emphasizes that the complex internal challenges facing Venezuela can only be sustainably addressed through inclusive political dialogue among Venezuelans themselves.
“The African Union expresses its solidarity with the Venezuelan people and reiterates its commitment to the promotion of peace, stability, and mutual respect among nations and regions,” the statement added.
