World class athletes arrive for Okpekpe race

Three world champions of Kenyan origin, Alex Korio, Simon Cheprot and Polline Wanjiku headline the list of 35 international elite athletes for Saturday’s IAAF silver label Okpekpe international 10km road race in Okpekpe, Etsako east local government of Edo state, south-south Nigeria.

The trio will be aiming to make history as the first persons to win a second title in Okpekpe since the inaugural edition of the race in 2013.

The athletes have been assured of the best hospitality throughout the duration of their stay in the country.

All participating athletes will embark on the tour of the course on Friday in line with IAAF requirements.

Head of the race secretariat mercy Etukudo said this year’s race will be explosive as only the best athletes over the 10 km distance have been assembled for the race.

She predicts a new course record and has tipped Ethiopia’s Taye Grima, who holds the pre-race fastest time (28:07) to cause an upset.

The race will be live on the terrestrial platform of the Africa Independent Television, AIT.
