UN human rights official on diplomatic trip to Mideast crisis region

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk is travelling to the Middle East for a round of diplomatic talks, his office said.

The German UN diplomat is to meet with government representatives, civil society actors, victims and UN colleagues in Egypt and Jordan to discuss the human rights situation in the region.

In the Gaza war, both the Islamist Hamas and Israel were accused of serious violations of human rights.

Türk is also expected to meet with Egypt’s Foreign Minister and the Secretary General of the Arab League in Cairo.

However, on Wednesday, Türk plans to visit the Rafah border crossing between the Gaza Strip and Egypt.

“It has been one full month of carnage, of incessant suffering, bloodshed, destruction, outrage and despair,’’ Türk said.

“Human rights violations are at the root of this escalation and human rights play a central role in finding a way out of this vortex of pain.’’
