President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described the coronation of His Imperial Majesty, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo, as a historic moment not only for the people of Oyo but for the entire Yoruba nation and Nigeria at large.
The President, who was represented by the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, at the coronation ceremony in Oyo, praised the new monarch’s ascension as a continuation of a rich cultural legacy and a symbol of unity for the Yoruba people.
“This historic occasion is not just a celebration for the great people of Oyo but for the entire Yoruba race and Nigeria as a whole,” the President noted in his speech. “The Alaafin stool is a symbol of cultural pride, unity, and the enduring legacy of one of Africa’s most powerful empires.”
Speaking before a distinguished gathering that included the Ooni of Ife, Oba Eniitan Ogunwusi, the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, and other eminent royal fathers and dignitaries, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of the Alaafin’s throne as a bridge between the past and the future.
He reflected on the reign of the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, describing it as an era of cultural renaissance and political influence. The late monarch was praised for championing the revival of Yoruba festivals and strengthening ties with the diaspora, particularly in Brazil and Cuba, where Yoruba heritage remains vibrant.
President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to cultural preservation and development, stating that Oyo State remains a key focus in his “Renewed Hope Agenda,” especially in areas such as power supply, infrastructure, agriculture, education, and youth empowerment.
“Our administration is focused on youth empowerment and education in recognition of the need to develop and crystallize the potentials of our youth,” he said. “We will continue to engage our youths positively by creating opportunities in technology, entrepreneurship, and vocational training.”
He also underscored the role of traditional rulers in ensuring peace, cultural identity, and community development. “The Alaafin is more than a king; he is a symbol of Yoruba resilience, wisdom, and pride,” the President said.
In his final remarks, President Tinubu urged the people of Oyo to support the new Alaafin and uphold the values of peace, tolerance, and development.
“May your reign be long, prosperous, and filled with wisdom. May you lead Oyo to greater heights and continue to be a beacon of hope for our people,” he concluded.
The event drew attendees from across Nigeria and beyond, marking a new chapter in the history of one of Africa’s most revered traditional institutions.
