President Muhammadu Buhari has been advised to promptly settle corruption cases “playing out in the public”.
A retired Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Professor Boniface Oye-Adeniran gave the advice in a letter to the president routed through his Chief of Staff, Professor Ibrahim Gambari.
Citing a comment reportedly made by Buhari in 2015 before he became President, that “If We Don’t Kill Corruption, It Will Kill Us”, Oye-Adeniran listed alleged corruption cases currently playing out in the public to include that of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), and of the suspended Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Prof. Toyin Ogundipe.
Oye-Adeniran, who was a former President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), advised the President not to reinstate Prof. Ogundipe, and to remove Prof. Folashade Ogunshola Prof. Folashade Ogunshola as the Acting Vice Chancellor of University of Lagos, accusing her also ongoing corruption.
He listed the other corruption cases playing out in the public to include that of the Director-General of the Pension Commission (PenCom); alleged corruption at NECO involving the present Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education; and alleged corruption in the Federal Government’s School Feeding programme.
On the alleged corruption by the PenCom boss, he noted that staff of the commission wrote to the Senate about her corrupt practices, adding that one of the allegations is a constant breach of Procurement Law.
Noting that each of the cited cases involved billions of Naira, Oye-Adeniran said “The Government should not wait for another protest, #ENDCORRUPTION Protest, before it acts. Prevention is better than cure.
“The Signature tune of this Federal Government is an Anti-Corruption Policy. An impression must not be created within and without the country that it is selective and ineffective.
“I believe in the Anti-Corruption Policy of the Federal Government. That’s why I have reported to the EFCC, the Principal Officers of the University of Lagos with supporting documents.”
