President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to former President Olusegun Obasanjo as he marks his 88th birthday, describing him as an “extraordinary leader and statesman” whose influence has shaped Nigeria’s history for over six decades.
In a statement released on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, President Tinubu acknowledged Obasanjo’s pivotal role at critical moments in Nigeria’s development, highlighting his military and civilian leadership.
“Providence has constantly thrust General Obasanjo to the forefront at critical junctures in Nigeria’s story,” Tinubu noted.
Recalling his military career, Tinubu praised Obasanjo’s role in ending the Nigerian Civil War when he received the instrument of surrender from Biafran Army Commander, Col. Philip Effiong, in 1970. He also lauded Obasanjo’s leadership as head of state following the assassination of General Murtala Mohammed in 1976, which culminated in the transition to civilian rule in 1979.
The president further commended Obasanjo’s return to power as Nigeria’s civilian president in 1999, describing his tenure as one that ushered in democratic reforms and shaped the country’s governance for years to come.
“During the two eras, General Obasanjo implemented critical policies and reforms and made important decisions that profoundly impacted the lives of many Nigerians,” Tinubu stated.
Acknowledging Obasanjo’s influence beyond the corridors of power, Tinubu highlighted his contributions to conflict resolution and advocacy for good governance across Africa and the world.
“Out of office, only a few will deny that the former president continues to wield considerable influence among the political elite at home and is well-regarded abroad, where he is an ambassador of global peace and a troubleshooter,” he said.
While recognizing Obasanjo’s sometimes controversial role in national affairs, Tinubu described his interventions as valuable in shaping public policies and holding leaders accountable.
The president concluded his tribute by offering prayers for the elder statesman, wishing him continued strength and longevity.
“I pray that God Almighty will grant him the grace and strength to live for more years so the nation and Africa can continue to benefit from his wisdom and knowledge,” Tinubu said.
