President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended his heartfelt wishes to Christians in Nigeria and across the world as they commence the 2025 Lenten season, urging Nigerians to embrace compassion, selflessness, and national unity.
In a statement released on Thursday, the President highlighted the significance of Lent as a period of fasting, prayer, and repentance, preparing believers for Easter. He encouraged Christians to engage in deep spiritual reflection and acts of kindness, quoting Genesis 3:19 to emphasize the transient nature of life.
“This year’s Lent, a time of devotion and reflection for Christians, coincides with the holy month of Ramadan for Muslims, a season that similarly emphasises devotion, sacrifice, and acts of kindness. This convergence of religious observances is a testament to the unity in diversity that characterises our nation,” the President said.
He called on all Nigerians, irrespective of religious affiliations, to extend love to those in need by comforting the grieving, visiting the sick, and uplifting the marginalized, stressing that such acts reflect the true essence of worship.
President Tinubu also noted the nation’s economic and security improvements, stating that the last quarter of 2024 saw significant growth, a decline in food prices, a stabilizing exchange rate, and lower fuel costs. He commended security agencies for their efforts in strengthening internal security, expressing optimism for the future.
“As we journey through this season with penitence and steadfast devotion to God Almighty, may His kindness bring healing to the sick, prosperity to our people, and peace to our nation,” the President concluded.
Lent, a 40-day period beginning on Ash Wednesday, is observed by Christians worldwide as a time of sacrifice, prayer, and preparation for Easter.
