The Coordinator, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Fadama CARES Project, Mr Usman Adangara on Thursday says perishable goods account for a significant percentage of waste in markets.
Adangara said this in Gwagwalada at the opening of a training workshop on waste management organised for group assets and wet market beneficiaries of the projects.
He said the training was designed to build the capacities of participants on waste management and techniques of its conversion to wealth.
According to him, the training will also equip the participants with the requisite knowledge to train other beneficiaries on crop production.
Adangara said, ”the idea was to discourage bush burning and deforestation as methods of land clearing among crop farmers.
“You will agree with me that animal wastes, farm produce and other consumption-oriented perishable goods constitute a significant percentage of wastes in our markets.
“Disposal of these substantial amounts of waste is quite challenging because improper management and disposal can lead to serious ecological challenges.”
He said that the training was aimed at ensuring proper utilisation, management of group assets and upgrade of wet markets facilities.
Adangara said the Nigeria CARES Programme, under Result Area 2 had been designed to upgrade water and sanitation facilities in existing wet markets to ensure sustainable and safe livelihoods.
The coordinator called on the participants to take advantage of the workshop to train other beneficiaries utilising facilities in their various Farmers Community Associations.
