Corruption has long been a cancer stunting Nigeria’s growth and development. In 2023 alone, government officials and others received a staggering N721 billion in bribes, according to a report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). The report, titled “Corruption in Nigeria: Patterns and Trends,” highlights the pervasive nature of this scourge, which accounted for 0.35% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Olanipekun Olukoyede, is at the forefront of the war against this endemic corruption. In a stirring address to stakeholders at the Unity Fountain in Abuja on the 2024 African Anti-Corruption Day, Olukoyede underscored the gravity of the situation. “Aside from terrorism, corruption is the next deadliest affliction of humanity,” he declared. He believes that whistleblowing, supported by integrity, consistency, and credible intelligence, is crucial to winning the battle against corruption. “We cannot win the war against corruption through lip service, emotional outbursts, or mere mob campaigns. During the Road Walk to mark the anti-corruption day, which saw EFCC staff and other stakeholders parading through the streets of Maitama, Abuja, Olukoyede’s leadership was palpable. The walk, filled with singing, dancing, and rallying cries, culminated at the Unity Fountain, symbolizing a unified stand against corruption.
Prominent figures, including the NLC President Joe Ajearo and Adams Otakwu of the Conference of Civil Society, echoed Olukoyede’s call for action. Ajearo pledged the Nigeria Labour Congress’s full support to the EFCC’s efforts, while Otakwu highlighted corruption as the most insidious threat to national security, surpassing even terrorism and insurgency.

He has assured Nigerians that the EFCC is committed to safeguarding the identities and safety of whistleblowers, encouraging more citizens to come forward with credible information.
