Lalong resigns as minister for Senate

Simon Lalong has resigned as the Minister of Labour and Employment to assume his elected position as the Senator representing the Plateau South Senatorial District.

Lalong’s spokesperson, Dr. Makut Simon Macham announced his resignation for the Senate following a Court of Appeal declaration and consultation for the “Renewed Hope agenda” of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Macham added that Lalong in a letter submitted to Tinubu on Tuesday, 19th December, 2023 reminded the President that after an exhaustive legal processes, the Court of Appeal declared him as the duly elected Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District and directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to issue him the Certificate of Return.

According to Macham, Lalong said the decision for his resignation was not made lightly because of the trust and confidence that the President had in him as a Minister in his cabinet, having served as the Director General of the Tinubu/Shettima Campaign Council which delivered victory for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“However, after extensive consultations, it has become expedient for him to proceed and take his seat at the Red Chambers to continue to contribute to the Renewed Hope agenda of Mr President,” the spokesperson said.
