Usman Alkali Baba, the IGP, will not step down in the middle of the election season. In contrast, he already has a letter of appointment that will keep him in his position for an additional term.
Mohammed Dingyadi, minister of police affairs, told state house correspondents about this after the first meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) in 2023. He elaborated on how the regulations around an IGP’s retirement had been altered by the Police Act of 2020.
There has been recent conjecture that the Police Chief, who will turn 60 on March 1, 2023, may resign in accordance with the law requiring all public workers to do so at the age of 60.
Dingyadi responded to reporters’ inquiries about the IGP’s impending retirement by saying, “I don’t know where you got your record but let me say that by the provision of the Police Act 2020, the IG is now supposed to have a kind of four-year period and Mr. President has already given him a letter of appointment in that regard.”
With that said, “IG going out during this election period does not arise.”
On April 6, 2021, then-Deputy Inspector General Baba was promoted by President Muhammadu Buhari to the position of Inspector General of Police.
In June of 2021, he was officially named Inspector General of Police by the Police Council.
Some 290 police officers and administrators, including the Inspector General of Police (IGP), three Deputy Inspectors General of Police (DIGs), and a number of Assistant Inspectors General of Police (AIGs), are slated to retire in the first quarter of 2023.
Dingyadi also revealed that the Federal Executive Council (FEC) had approved the draught bill for an Act to establish Nigeria Police Institutions, which he clarified would serve to give existing training institutions around the country a legal footing rather than create brand new ones.
He further stated that corruption within the Nigeria Police has been greatly diminished.
