South Korea staged a major world cup upset in Russia, defeating the defending champions Germany by 2-0.
It was one of the upsets in Group F, with Sweden also beating Mexico 3-0 to take over the leadership of the group, by bagging six points and also having goal advantage.
Despite their feat, the Koreans would head home elated that they had shoved out the champions and even ended up third in the group, while dumbfounded Germany ended up in the bottom.
According to FIFA only six times in history have the champions crashed out in the first round, and four of those have happened since the turn of the millennium.
Only Brazil, returning champions in 2002, made it past the group stage. France, Italy, Spain and now Germany – four European giants of the game – have fallen at the first hurdle of his defence.
