The Federal Government has pledged support for the establishment of National Research and Innovation Council (NRIC) and National Research Fund (NRF) in Nigeria.
Mr. Uche Nnaji, the Minister Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology made the pledge in Abuja on Tuesday at a high-level policy dialogue programme.
NAN reports that the three day meeting is aimed at bringing together stakeholders to strengthen the national research and innovation funding agencies in West Africa with Nigeria as a case study.
The Minister noted that the event represents a critical step in establishing the National Research and Innovation Council (NRIC) and the National Research Fund (NRF).
Nnaji noted that the initiatives which are set to transform Nigeria’s research and innovation landscape, directly aligns with the FG’s agenda.
“ Allow me to convey President Tinubu’s full support for these initiatives.
“His administration’s eight-point agenda, which focuses on security, economy, agriculture, infrastructure, human capital development, social welfare, rule of law, and foreign policy, underscores the importance of a knowledge-driven economy,” he said.
According to him, “President Bola Tinubu has already approved an inter-ministerial committee, under the office of the Vice President, working diligently on a draft Federal Executive Council memo for the establishment of the NRF.”
“This committee, composed of representatives from various key ministries and stakeholders, is tasked with creating a robust framework for these initiatives to thrive.”
Nnaji also added that bill for the establishment of the NRIC and NRF is currently under review by the National Assembly.
“ Additionally, this legislation is critical as it will formalize the council’s mandate and provide the legal basis for sustainable funding.
Nnaji said establishments of the NRIC and NRF are central to fulfilling the mandate which aligns with national socio-economic needs and as outlined in Nigeria’s 2022 STI Policy.
He also said the fund will position STI as a national priority and facilitate the development of competitive projects that address both local and global challenges
“ The NRIC will coordinate STI activities across various sectors and ministries, ensuring that projects and initiatives are in harmony with national priorities.,” he said.
The Executive Director,African Technology Policy Studies (ATPS), Prof. Nicholas Ozor in his remarks urged the FG to fast track the establishments of NRIC and NRF.
He added that a thriving national environment is one where research, innovation, and development are prioritized.
“ Establishing the NRIC and NRF will establish national R&D priorities and by setting clear goals and focus areas, then we can ensure that our research efforts directly contribute to national growth and streamlining efforts.
“ This will foster a collaborative approach to innovation, promote synergy and mobilize funding for Innovation in key areas.
“ The NRF will provide a sustainable funding mechanism for innovation activities in priority areas, ensuring that resources are available to support transformative research and technological advancements,” he said.
Stakeholders and representatives from UNESCO, the African Technology Policy Studies Network (ATPS), and the African University of Science and Technology (AUST), Members of the National Assembly, Academia, Civil Society, Private Sector, and International Partners were present at the meeting.
