Ex-Nigerian first lady Victoria Aguiyi-Ironsi dies at 97

Victoria Aguiyi-Ironsi, the wife of late Nigerian head of state, Major General Aguiyi-Ironsi, is dead.
The former first lady passed on Monday at 97.
Victoria’s husband Aguiyi-Ironsi was the supreme commander of the National Military Government for six months before being overthrown and assassinated in the 1966 Nigerian counter-coup.
Her son, Ambassador Tom Aguiyi-Ironsi announced her death in a short letter to Governor Okezie Ikpeazu.

“My family wishes to inform you that It has pleased God to call to glory Noble Lady Victoria Aguiyi – Ironsi to eternal rest
“She passed on at the early hours of today August 23, 2021”, he said.
Victoria’s death comes a few months to her 98th birthday on 21 November.
Victoria’s husband, Aguiyi-Ironsi was Nigeria’s head of state from January 1966 till the counter-coup on 29 July 1966.
She served as a commissioner of the Local Government Services Commission in Umuahia.
