The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has said that the 378.3 megawatts Egbema Power Plant in Imo State is 70 per cent completed, boosting Nigeria’s electricity supply.
Adebayo Adelabu disclosed this at the weekend during an inspection visit to the power plant,
He promised to complete the 378.3MW Egbema Power Plant, the 330/33KV switchyard, the Omoku-Egbema-Owerri-Alaoji 330KV DC transmission lines, and the Owerri transmission substation expansion project.
“The projects are at various stages, with the power plant at 70 per cent completion. The collaboration between the Imo State Government and NDPHC aims to enhance electricity supply and energize homes and businesses in Imo State through the completion of the Egbema Power Plant and associated transmission infrastructure,” Adelabu said in a statement through his spokesperson, Bolaji Tunji on Sunday.
The Minister said the country’s power generation rose to 5000 megawatts in April while it targets 6000mw by December 2024.
Nigeria, with an estimated population of 200 million, had continued to suffer epileptic power supply for decades.
On April 3, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission announced a 240 per cent tariff increase for band A customers who receive 20-24 hours of power supply.
However, Nigerians, the Nigeria Labour Congress, and the Trade Union Congress had kicked against the hike. NERC later announced an N18 tariff reduction. Meanwhile, unsatisfied with the reduction, organized labour threatened to go on protest over the tariff hike.
